Program Description
The Maui Aloha Sleepaway program is a summer camp experience unlike any other – a complete immersion in Hawaiian culture. Located on the beautiful island of Maui, with surfing as its central focus, this weeklong program will teach campers the fundamentals of surfing from a uniquely Hawaiian point of view.
Welcoming kids and teens between 8 and 15, this six-day program focuses on surfing technique and ocean-safety skills for the beginning, intermediate and advanced surfer. Camp participants learn the basic techniques of riding waves, water safety, and the ocean environment. Evening activities allow participants the special opportunity to learn about Polynesian culture and the ancient Hawaiian lifestyle which centered around the sea.
The Hawaiiana Surf Camp is operated by Maui’s legendary Rodney Kilborn, a 30 year veteran fireman, and his wife, a High School Principal. Rodney and his staff will be presenting this program in combination with Aloha Beach Camp counselors, directors and staff. Notable Hawaiian heritage experts will make special guest appearances each night to share their stories and local lore.
Daily surf sessions are designed to build a strong foundation in the fundamentals of surfing and ocean science. Knowledgeable instructors team up in small age and skill appropriate peer groups. Lessons are then customized to each group’s specific needs. A maximum of four participants per instructor ensures consistency, familiarity and a vast amount of individualized attention guaranteeing acceleration in confidence, fitness and personal growth.
Base camp consists of tent camping on the Kilborn’s Hawaiian property overlooking the sea. There is a volleyball count, barbeque, outdoor showers and a huge grass expanse covering over an acre of land. Three healthy meals are served each day, using local fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood whenever possible.
Evenings consist of optional cultural activities unique to this program. Discover Hawaiian heritage first-hand from natives who were born and raised on the land. Learn the Hawaiian language through song and dance, then entertain your family and friends upon your return to the mainland. See where the best surfers in the world launch their crafts to ride some of the world’s largest waves at Piehi, known as “Jaws.” Weave a coconut hat from the fronds of a palm, perfect attire to hit your hometown shore. Listen to elders who sailed the Hokulea, a craft like the ones the Polynesians used to sail all across the Pacific Ocean. Learn how the Hawaiians used the stars to navigate the great expanses of water in their small vessels. On the last evening campers will celebrate their week’s achievement with a traditional Hawaiian luau and ancient Hawaiian games.
